    Herb's Description

    Saussurea lappa (Dcne.) Sch.. An erect robust perennial herb 1-2 m, stem stout, fibrous, radical leaves with long lobately winged stalk, u.pto c. 1 m long; flower heads stalkless, very hard, rounded, 3-5 cm in diam; flowers dark blue-purple or almost black, in axillary and terminal clusters; achene c. 3 mm long, curved, compressed11731. Root stout, often 7-15 cm long; 1-5.5 cm wide. Roots are fusiform, conical and tapering, collapse in the centre, thin roots cylindrical, fresh roots dirty grey to light yellow, dried are brown or dull-red.
